Project Homeless Connect
Sitka joins communities across the United States, Canada, and Australia by holding Project Homeless Connect [PHC] events. PHC events are one-day, one-stop events designed to connect individuals who are homeless or at risk of being homeless with resources, services, shelter items, and warm clothing.
Through our partnership with local organizations, we sponsor PHC events in November, January, and March. Events are held at the Salvation Army, include lunch, and are free and open to all.
Our January PHC event also serves as the community's Point-in-Time count of the number of homeless individuals in Sitka, which is important when applying for grants.
Volunteers are essential on PHC event days. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact us for more information.
Current PHC Events are as follows from 11 am to 1 pm at the Salvation Army - lunch provided:
Other Projects
Men's Winter Shelter: We provide official support to the group of individuals in Sitka who are working on establishing a Men's Winter Shelter.
Candlelight Vigil: Annually on December 21st, the longest day of the year, which is the National Homeless Persons' Memorial Day, we hold a Candlelight Vigil at the Crescent Harbor shelter to honor the homeless in our community who died that year, as well as raise awareness about the plight of the homeless.
Individual Support: As one part of a solution after all other avenues have been exhausted, we provide financial support to individuals in need of assistance to maintain or secure housing. Our process to receive assistance starts with the Salvation Army. The Salvation Army contacts us when a need arises where we can be of assistance.
Homeless Summit: Beginning in 2009 we have offered a few opportunities for service providers in Sitka to gather and learn more about each other in order to better understand the services that are available for individuals experiencing homelessness or at risk of being homeless. Our next Homeless Summit is planned for sometime in 2018.
